AITA for making my son live with me so he won't be around his Dad or Stepmom?

Jonas Bergström

In the quiet struggle of a fractured family, a mother watches her teenage son navigate the delicate balance between responsibility and childhood. Jayden, caught between two worlds, juggles school, football, and a part-time job not out of desire but necessity—his earnings meant to fund fleeting moments of youth and independence amidst the shadows of financial strain.

But beneath the surface lies a troubling truth: the very hands meant to support him siphon away the majority of his hard-earned money, leaving a boy burdened far beyond his years. This silent injustice ignites a fierce protectiveness in his mother, who sees not just her son’s frustration, but the stolen innocence of a child still learning what it means to grow up.

'AITA for making my son live with me so he won't be around his Dad or Stepmom?'

A mother is shocked and angry to learn that her teenage son's father and stepmother are taking all of the money he earns at his part-time job. The boy worked hard to have his own spending money, but his father took every paycheck.

To protect her son from financial control and emotional guilt, the mother decided to move him into her home full-time. While she feels she did the right thing, she still worries if she made the wrong choice by removing him from his father's life.

According to Dr. Susan Forward, a well-known family therapist and author of the book Toxic Parents, using guilt to control a child is a form of emotional manipulation. When parents take all of a teenager's money and tell him he owes them for being born, they are using emotional blackmail. This behavior hurts the teenager's self-esteem and makes him feel like a financial tool rather than a member of the family.

The father and stepmother show very poor boundaries and communication. Instead of teaching the boy how to save and budget, they use force and guilt to take his money. The stepmother's comment that she only lets him live there makes the boy feel unwelcome and insecure in his own home. The mother's decision to step in was a direct and necessary response to protect her son from an unhealthy environment.

The mother acted appropriately by removing her son from a home where he was being exploited. For future steps, she should help her son set up a private bank account that his father cannot access. She should also encourage her son to speak with a counselor to process the emotional manipulation he experienced from his father and stepmother.

The mother feels protective of her son's well-being and wants to shield him from emotional and financial control. However, she feels conflicted because she worries that her actions might have damaged her son's relationship with his father.

Was the mother right to move her son to her home to protect him from financial exploitation, or did she overreact by taking him away over a disagreement about household expenses?
